STEW FAIR: April 15th @ Baltimore Open City

30 March 2011

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, March 30th at 7PM at Red Emma's!

Coming out of hibernation, STEW returns on Friday, April 15th @ 7PM---with a one-time new location and an experimental new format we've been wanting to try out for a while.

Teaming up with MICA's Baltimore Open City exhibition, in which a group of student curators are tackling issues of urban segregation and inequality, the STEW team (Red Emma's and the Baltimore Development Cooperative) are bringing a special one time STEW event to the North Avenue Market space (16 W. North Ave.) that's hosting the exhibition.

Rather than a sit-down affair with a small number of groups, we're bringing ten groups together to present their work in a more informal setting modeled after the "science fair," where each group will be paired with one of our culinary geniuses serving up a locally-sourced, innovative course as part of an evening of ambulatory eating and mingling. We want to give everyone attending a chance to talk, mingle, exchange ideas, and have the kind of mix of conversations that our first stab at a STEW format sometimes made a little difficult. The first course will be served right around 7, and courses will continue to be served throughout the evening as you learn about all the amazing groups presenting their work. We'll have a cash bar on hand, too.

As always, the point of STEW is not just to eat great food and learn about amazing projects, but is to also help those projects out financially while experimenting with new models for grassroots funding. This time, your $10 (or more) admission, and the proceeds from the bar, will get straightforwardly divided between all the groups presenting their work (after we pay for the raw ingredients going into the food selections). But on top of that, we're asking each group to bring an item that represents their efforts to be auctioned off at the event's conclusion---a chance to show your support for what you find most valuable, and a chance for the presenting groups to raise more much-needed funds to keep doing what they do.

Groups presenting will include:
  • Whitelock Community Farm
  • Baltimore Algebra Project
  • United Workers
  • Baltimore Free School
  • Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle
  • Copycat Theater
  • Hollaback! Baltimore
  • Baltimore Green Currency
  • Kidz City
  • New Lens
